Why ’80 for Brady’ is the ultimate nostalgia movie

Tom Brady may be officially retiring (again), but his co-stars in the new movie “80 for Brady,” Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field and Rita Moreno, are still in the game.

In the comedy, based on a true story, Fonda, Tomlin, Field and Moreno play Brady-obsessed football fans who travel to Super Bowl LI in 2017, when the quarterback was still with the New England Patriots, in hopes of seeing him play in person.

“I’m a sports fan, and I think people, audiences, the world underestimates the huge sports audience that older women are,” Field said in an interview for the film.

Brady also serves as a producer on the movie, and the cast couldn’t help but be in awe of the titular quarterback’s all-around appeal. In an interview, Field gushed, “Just being around him is fabulous. He’s a terrific guy, and let’s face it, he is one of the most dazzling athletes who’s ever lived. It’ll be a long time before another quarterback comes along to top his accomplishments.”

The 45-year-old shared just as much admiration for his co-stars, saying in an interview, “It’s really a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to be in their presence, to see them act. They are really the GOATs in what they do.”

“GOAT” of course stands for “Greatest of all time,” something the NFL legend has been dubbed on many occasions. And it’s no surprise, given his seven Super Bowl rings. But Brady’s trophy case barely holds a candle to the combined winning power of the movie’s star cast.

Between the four of them, Fonda, Tomlin, Field and Moreno share 12 Emmys, five Oscars, three Tonys and two Grammys. Moreno can boast at least one of all four trophies that make up an EGOT, and she is the first Latina woman to do so.

Despite their incredible careers, “80 for Brady” marks the first time all four iconic actresses are together on-screen. For Fonda, who described it as a “fortuitous” opportunity, it was also a chance to work with women she calls friends.

TOM BRADY GETS RETIREMENT WELL-WISHES FROM GISELE BÜNDCHEN: ‘ONLY WONDERFUL THINGS’

Fonda and Tomlin have most recently starred together in Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie,” a comedy about two women who form an unlikely friendship later in life. But the pair have known each other for more than 40 years, going back to when they first teamed up for the classic workplace comedy “9 to 5.”

Of her fellow iconic castmates, Tomlin said, “Jane and I, people have just remarked so often over the chemistry we had on ‘Grace and Frankie,’ and I suppose it harks all the way back to ‘9 to 5.'”

She continued, “I have great admiration for her. And I love the other two women, too. I mean, they’ve had incredible careers, and they’re just all around very accessible, sweet, very kind, very irreverent. So , they’re all the elements of a good time on the set.”

“9 to 5” also starred Dolly Parton, who wrote and performed the movie’s iconic song of the same name, and she serves as an unexpected focal point for all four stars to cross paths.

For example, Moreno wasn’t in the movie “9 to 5,” but she was in the ABC sitcom based off of the film, where she met Parton, who re-recorded the song for the series.

As for how Field ties into this web, she and Parton starred together in another classic female-led film, 1989’s “Steel Magnolias.”

When it comes to “80 for Brady,” Parton doesn’t appear in the movie, but she does perform alongside another super group of singers made up of Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauper, Gloria Estefan and Debbie Harry on the original song for the film , “Gonna Be You.”

The song was written by 14-time Oscar-nominee Diane Warren, who wanted to assemble a dream team of singers.

“Since 80 was in the title I got a crazy idea, why not get some of the most iconic singers from the 80s, who are still amazing and always will be, to all sing it?!!!!” Warren said in a press release for the film.

But “80 for Brady” isn’t just about bringing together iconic stars from Hollywood, sports and music. As Moreno explained in an interview, “[It’s] a movie about friendship.”

In fact, the story is actually inspired by a real-life group of older women who bonded over a shared love for Tom Brady.

Elaine St. Martin, Betty Pensavalle and three other friends, Anita, Pat and Claire, made watching Brady play a regular Sunday activity, according to “CBS News Sunday Morning.” Though Brady moved to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is now retiring, the women continue to check in on each other.

“Good friends stick together and stay together and do for each other,” Pensavalle told the outlet.

That bond translates on screen with the stars of the movie, who are also excited to highlight older women. As Moreno said, “I think what it does that is most unusual is that it enlightens the audience about what it’s like to be an older person, an older woman. You just don’t usually see that.”

Fonda continued the idea that aging doesn’t have to stop life’s joy in an interview with AARP the Magazine.

“I think as you get older, you get better at almost everything,” she said. “I love my work more than ever, and it feels more balanced now. I take things in stride more than I once did. Things are a little simpler.”

“80 for Brady” is in theaters on Feb. 3.

DeGeneres and de Rossi tied the knot in August 2008 in Los Angeles. At the time, an insider told Page Six that the couple only had 20 wedding guests at the intimate ceremony.

Last August, the comedian celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary by sharing a montage of some of her and de Rossi’s most unforgettable moments on her now-defunct daytime talk show.

“It’s good to be loved. It’s profound to be understood.” I love you, @portiaderossi. Happy 14! ❤️,” DeGeneres captioned the post.

As Tom Brady retires, Gisele Bundchen goes to work

How

On Tuesday afternoon People magazine ran a story about a Gisele Bündchen photo shoot in Florida. In a photo that ran with the story, the model ran her fingers through her tousled mane of hair while posing in a see-through dress on the beach. The sheer material clung to her sculpted calves, her six-pack abs, her can-you-believe-I’ve-had-two-kids breasts, all of it. She looked better at 42 than she had in her 20s when she spent a decade as the highest-paid supermodel in the world. This was a woman whose physicality resides at the rarefied intersection of genetics, effort and talent and who, after putting her own career on pause for 13 years so her ex-husband could play sportsball, was finally getting back in the saddle again.

Here, in recent weeks, was a freshly divorced Gisele posing topless in a Louis Vuitton ad, adorned mostly in a polka-dot handbag. Here was a freshly divorced Gisele going for a run in Costa Rica with her handsome “family jiujitsu instructor,” which insiders swore was completely platonic.

On Wednesday morning Tom Brady, he of the sportsball, announced he was retiring.

NFL Quarterback Tom Brady announced his retirement on Feb. 1 after 23 years in the National Football League. (Video: Tom Brady)

If you believe the theories of the online commentariat, these two events were linked. The couple’s split last year allegedly came about because Gisele wanted her husband to retire back then and Tom simply couldn’t give up the game.

No one but the couple knows the full story. What we do know is that Tom ultimately signed on for another season. Divorce lawyers were hired, ink was applied to papers. Then Tom’s bonus season was a bust, and Gisele posed on a beach, and maybe the quarterback came to the sobering realization of exactly how much he’d given up in order to lose to the Dallas Cowboys.

Memes circulated following Tom’s retirement announcement. In the most evocative, the football star is portrayed as John Cusack in “Say Anything,” standing under Gisele’s window with a boombox, begging her to take him back. Boy, had this doofus messed up.

But he was trying, maybe, to fix things? Note how he’d written “I love my family” under his Instagram announcement which, like Gisele’s photo shoot, appeared to take place on a Florida beach. Note how he’d included a few images of Gisele in his Instagram stories, but subtle ones: images of Gisele from behind, with her arms slung around their children. If Brady was trying some kind of “Say Anything” move, it was of the most respectful nature.

On Wednesday afternoon, Gisele responded directly to Tom’s retirement announcement. “Wishing you only wonderful things in this new chapter of your life,” she posted.

Gisele’s posting was a message of pleasant remove, the sort of generically warm sentiments usually reserved for a graduation card signed by a distant aunt. It suggested that there would be no reunification, that the book of life cannot be read or lived backward, that Tom would be embarking on this new chapter with Gisele’s support but not with her.

Look, I am two-thirds of the way through writing this column about Tom Brady’s retirement and divorce, and even I can’t tell you why I’m following this intimate celebrity gossip. I can barely tell a quarterback from a Quarter Pounder; I have never stood on a beach in a see-through dress while a stylist aimed a box fan at my hair.

But this stratospherically famous marriage between two rich and beautiful people does seem to tell us something about relationships in general, or what it means to negotiate a whole life with another person. Whose career takes the back seat? Who agrees to sacrifice, to move to Tampa, to be the one on call when the kid is puking at school? Time is not infinite and neither is geography. You can’t have one parent walking on a runway in Milan while the other is quarterbacking in Green Bay. What does it cost to pursue your own dreams, or to try your best to make another person’s dreams your own?

Few of us can imagine what it would feel like to be as good at anything as Tom Brady is at football — a gift that borders on the divine, as if it were bestowed by God. But I think most of us can imagine what kinds of things he might have been feeling as he made an Instagram post promising not to get emotional and then getting emotional regardless.

He might have been thinking about how he’d gone to work for 23 painful, impossible years, building a legacy, setting an example, leaving it all out on the field, winning like nobody had ever won, and also losing, because nobody can win everything all the time. He might have been wondering who he would be now, without all of that. And he might have been thinking about how he’d given everything he had to a vocation, only to reach the end and wonder whether everything was enough or too much.

James Cameron admits Jack could have survived Titanic

james cameron
Photo: Chung Sung Jun (Getty Images)

Okay titanic fans, YouTube video essayists, and “Let’s debate this topic” Hinge prompt users everywhere: it’s time to put this one to rest once and for all. From the mouth of James Cameron himself, Jack could have maybe, possibly survived his watery grave at the end of titanic. But there are still, according to the director, “a lot of variables” to consider. And no, he couldn’t have just gotten on the door with Rose.

Cameron weighed in on the quarter-century-old debate for the upcoming National Geographic special Titanic: 25 Years Later With James Cameron, which celebrates the film’s anniversary. In a sneak peak, Cameron walks audiences through a highly scientific test involving two costumed stunt doubles, a (hopefully above-freezing) pool, a fake door, and a whole lot of simulated shivering.

Cameron and the stunt performers ran three tests. In the first, both actors simply try to get on the door. As predicted, it doesn’t work. (Sorry Hinge prompt users, but MythBusters did tell us as much six years ago.) With both Jack and Rose on the door, it would have submerged further into the water, exposing both to the deadly freezing temperatures. Not quite the happy ending fans have been clamoring for.

Next, the stunt performers find a position where both of their upper bodies are out of the water, protecting their vital organs. “Projecting it out, he could have made it pretty long. Like hours,” says Cameron. Promising, but it’s important to remember that Jack and Rose have been running around and thrashing to stay afloat in the water for hours before this. Factoring in the fatigue, they might not have been able to maintain these positions for the time it would take the rescue boats to arrive.

Finally, a helpful diver holds the performer playing Rose underwater and very kindly lets the performer playing Jack splash him in the face a bunch of times to simulate the exhaustion the characters might have endured. In this test, Rose also gives Jack her life jacket because he can’t stop shivering. “He’s stabilized. He got into a place where if we projected that out, he just might have made it until the life boat got there,” says Cameron.

The final verdict? “Jack might have lived, but there’s a lot of variables. I think his thought process was ‘I’m not gonna do one thing that jeopardizes her.’ And that’s 100% in character.”

So there you have it, folks. You either die a romantic hero or live long enough to steal your girlfriend’s life jacket. Now, can we finally, finally let this debate die? (Too soon?)

Titanic: 25 Years Later With James Cameron airs February 5 on the National Geographic Channel.

Taylor Lautner recalls Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift embraces Taylor Lautner at the 2009 VMAs moments before Kanye West’s hiatus
Photo: Kevin Mazur (Getty Images)

Within the Taylor Swift cinematic universe, there are two main categories of supporting players: her long list of ex-lovers and her (possibly longer?) list of enemies. Taylor Lautner belongs to the former category, but you may have forgotten he was actually a first-hand witness in the most significant event in the latter. Yes, Swift’s ex-boyfriend was actually the one to present her with the prize at the infamous awards ceremony in which Kanye West jumped on the stage.

In a TikTok excerpt from their new podcast, Lautner was asked by his wife (also named Taylor, just to add some confusion to the tale) what moment in his life he’d return to if he could. He chose the 2009 VMAs, citing that he was “unaware” that the interruption was “not a skit.”

“I presented the award to her, so I gave her the award. I took five steps back and was standing five feet behind her. And yeah, in the middle of her giving her thank you speech, Kanye jumps up onto the stage,” he explained. “I can barely hear it. I can’t see them. I’m just assuming this whole thing was a practiced and rehearsed skit, because why else would Kanye West be jumping on the stage interrupting Taylor Swift? It just didn’t make sense.”

“If you look back at it, I’m actually caught laughing and like, giggling at it. I’m like, ‘I can’t hear them, but this is probably really funny right now,’” Lautner admits. “He jumped off. She finished. The second she turned back around and I saw her face for the first time, I was like, ‘Oh. No. …That wasn’t good.’”

Lautner must be forgiven for not realizing his lady friend needed a knight in shining armor at that moment. After all, just last year saw another shocking awards show interruption that many audience members, both present and watching from home, didn’t realize was unscripted until Chris Rock himself confirmed it. The times when celebrities veer from the pre-planned script tend to take on a surreal and almost mythological quality looking back at it.

Such is true for the 2009 VMAs: it made an indelible mark on pop culture at large and on the careers of the two artists at the center of the scandal. Swift sweetly immortalized her relationship with Lautner (“Back To December”) and the event itself (“Innocent”) on her Speak Now album, but her later lyrical nods to Ye developed a bitter, even vengeful edge. Ye, meanwhile, kickstarted a villain arc that has since reached disturbing new heights. If Lautner could go back in time to that moment, one wonders how he might change things—and how different the pop culture landscape might be as a result.

Forspoken star is ubothered by all the memes

Ella Balinska, voice actress of Frey in Forspoken, has seen the discourse surrounding the game and, unlike her character who would probably tell some of y’all to fuck off, she’s very gracious. In my interview with her, she told me she understands gamers are a passionate lot and that she appreciates that about them. “I love the gaming community for how committed they are to really getting in depth for each game that they play,” Balinska said over Zoom.

She also understands that folks’ reaction to Frey — sometimes calling her mean and shitty — stems from the fact that Frey isn’t like other video game protagonists. “This is such an extraordinary game that has come out with this amazing protagonist who’s so bold, so unapologetic, so reluctant in the best way possible,” she said. “I think audiences might not be so used to seeing that.”

In Forspoken, Frey is a rough-and-tumble orphan from the mean streets of New York City who gets sucked into Athia, a magical world that immediately tries to kill her. Detractors of the game have pointed out some of the things Frey says, like, “Is that a motherfucking dragon?” or, “I just moved shit with my mind,” come across as cringe. Balinska chalked that up to the quirks of humanity.

“There are things that we all do that might be eyebrow-raising to other people.”

So is it cringe? Perhaps. But humanity is itself cringe. And video game dialogue in particular has always had an air of cringe. (paging Hi-Fi Rush.) Aim Forspoken for some reason seems to be getting an inordinate amount of attention for something that mostly gets tuned out.

I think it’s deeply funny in an ironic way that some players are responding to Frey’s unabashed assertiveness by calling her an unlikeable bitch.

It’s a song and dance very familiar to me. In real life or fake, a Black woman’s behavior is given this level of scrutiny that just doesn’t exist for other people and characters. The Last of Us’ Ellie is just as vulgar and acerbic, but she has no shortage of people willing to die for her. Wonder what the difference is there?

So is it cringe? Perhaps. But humanity is itself cringe

In fact, a lot of Forspoken‘s plot — despite the fact that apparently no Black people wrote it — touched on very specific Black issues that deeply resonated with me and resolved them, at least somewhat, in a very satisfying way. Forspoken is a Black game. It doesn’t seem like it, and I don’t think Square Enix is trying to market it like that. But unintentional or not, there are elements to its plot, reinforced by Balinska’s phenomenal acting, that made me go “holy shit, this is Black as hell.”

Image: Square Enix/Luminous Productions

To examine Forspoken‘s Blackness, we have to start with Frey. I asked Balinska, beyond people’s projections and assumptions about the character, what her vision was for Frey. “Forspoken‘s tagline is ‘Find your fight’,” she said. “What I wanted to bring to [Frey] is that she finds her own fight in terms of her voice and things that she wants to fight for and stand up for.”

Balinska said she was invested in bringing Frey’s journey of self discovery to life, and it works really well in the game. Forspoken‘s has this typical “heroine is sent to a magical and dangerous world they don’t understand and is the only one with the power to save it” premise. It feels like most protagonists in this situation accept their fate with a kind of passivity because that’s the engine that drives the story. But Frey vehemently rejects this. She wants to go home.

Whenever there’s a progressive social movement that needs momentum, people on social media are quick to say “Black women will save us.” Black women like Stacey Abrams and others were credited with the huge voter registration drives that turned historically red states like Georgia purple. In South Carolina, Bree Newsome Bass was arrested for climbing a flagpole to take down the Confederate flag hanging above the state’s capital. There’s the now iconic photo of Ieshia Evans at a protest in Louisiana standing her ground against cops in full riot gear, the picture of absolute serenity.

“Black women will save us” is meant to be a positive thing, highlighting our comparatively higher rates of civil engagement, business ownership, and education. But we do the things we do because we have to, because it’s our mechanism for survival. Simply saying “Black women will save us” then becomes a way for people to absolve themselves of any responsibility for enacting the change they wanna see while also being deeply de-humanizing to Black women themselves.

Simply saying “Black women will save us” becomes a way for people to absolve themselves of any responsibility

Care Forspokenwhen I see people try to impress upon Frey, “You have to save us,” and she pretty clearly and firmly tells them, “No, I don’t. Leave me the fuck alone,” I cheered. Black women are not your mule, and Frey doesn’t allow herself to be one, and I loved that.

For most of the game, everything Frey does is motivated by her self-interest. That’s not typical isekai protagonist behavior. They’re supposed to be selfless — or at least that’s how the media tends to portray them. Even the most reluctant ones come around and embrace their destiny. Depending on the choice you make at the end of the game, Frey doesn’t.

At the end of the game, Frey realizes that she was born in Athia and was meant to take on the powers and responsibilities of her mother who was a Tanta. Because of plot reasons, Frey’s mother was forced to abandon her in the world of her father, who was apparently some guy from New York. (Why Frey’s magical mother did not drop her daughter off with her father’s people is a question I hope gets answered in a DLC.) Armed with this knowledge of who she is and why her life ended up as it did, Frey is presented with a choice: stay in Athia and fight the big bad or go home.

I swiftly chose the “go home” option and was delighted that not only did the game let you make that choice, but it even gave you a short little epilogue that is, in my opinion, the better ending of the game.

Frey’s being asked to potentially sacrifice her life to save people she doesn’t know. And for what? Because that was a destiny her mother designed for her? If it were me — and in that moment, playing as Frey, it was me — I’d choose “Nah.” So I did, and Frey got to return home to New York, with her favorite knishes and her cat Homer, to get started on that new life and hopefully find her father.

In the other ending, you stay — for a little while, at least — in Athia, no knishes and more importantly no Homer. Objectively, the “return” option is the better end. You get your cat back!

In women, selfishness is verboten. We are stereotyped as selfless caregivers expected to swallow their needs and wants for others. It’s turbo-charged for Black women specifically because of the “Black women will save us” sentiment and the strong Black women stereotype that sentiment reinforces. Forspoken‘s choice ending allowed me to exercise a selfishness that isekai stories and my own lived experience rarely permitted. I don’t want to be strong, I don’t want to be a savior. I am exhausted! I need salvation and strength for my own damn self!

Forspoken‘s ending allowed me to exercise a selfishness that isekai stories and my own lived experience rarely permitted

But Ella Balinska is better than me.

“Frey’s basically one of those characters that’s all talk. And I think the second she’s confronted with something real, she realizes what she needs to do. She’s someone who stands up for the people of Athia,” she said. “I know I have the choice to go home, especially with this character. So I think I’d stay and see.”

Image: Square Enix/Luminous Productions

And while I’ve tried very diligently not to pick fights with folks who have a negative opinion of Frey, Balinska doesn’t seem to mind, choosing instead to celebrate the people who enjoy Frey and the game. “I think people always have a positive or negative response to something they’re not used to seeing, and that’s completely okay because that’s the way we incite change,” she said.

Whether or not Forspoken is the success the myriad of people who worked on it hope it is, Balinska already has the metric of success she needs.

“I always reference my eight-year-old self whenever I talk about something I’m really proud of doing, I’m just speechless right now,” she said. “I just never would have thought of me playing games downstairs with my mom’s hairdresser’s son while she was getting her hair done. Now, to think that he can pick up this game and play as me, it’s just unbelievable. And I hope it inspires other people to realize that if you commit to the bit hard enough, something really crazy can happen.”

The couple have been dating since December 2004 and DeGeneres announced her plans to wed her lover on her chat show in May.

It came after the California Supreme Court ruled that same sex couples have the right to wed.

When announcing the upcoming nuptials, DeGeneres said: ‘It’s something that we’ve wanted to do and we want it to be legal and we are very, very excited.’

She joked: ‘Planning a wedding is very stressful. It’s crazy. My gardener is now invited.’

But added: ‘I think someday people will look back on this like women not having the right to vote and segregation and anything else that seems ridiculous that we don’t all have the same rights.’

DeGeneres said at the time that she planned to fly de Rossi’s family in from Australia and that ‘incredible people’ would sing at the ceremony.

She said she would show ‘a tiny bit’ of the nuptials on her talk show – and joked that she would use her latest Daytime Emmy as a wedding-cake topper.

Lisa Marie Presley wanted daughter Riley, not Priscilla, to take over legacy: Graceland exec

Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of icon Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley, trusted her daughter Riley to carry on the family’s legacy instead of her mother.

On February 1, which would’ve been Lisa Marie’s 55th birthday, a managing partner at Elvis Presley Enterprises, Joel Weinshanker, revealed the late singer’s last wishes.

Before her death, Joel claimed that Lisa Marie was “very, very quite certain and quite direct about who she wanted to have the legacy [left] to.”

“That was always Riley and Ben. There was never a question in her mind that they would be the stewards, that they would look at it exactly the way she did. Obviously, when Ben passed, it really sat with Riley,” he said during an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Elvis Radio.”

“Although Riley is a movie star, she’s an award-winning director, she had always had an interest and had always known that one day, she would be in charge of [things].”

After her recent death on January 12, Lisa Marie’s daughters Riley, Harper and Finley will receive Graceland, which is in a trust, a representative for Graceland confirmed with Fox News Digital.

Lisa Marie previously removed Priscilla and a former business manager as trustees and replaced them with her two oldest children, Riley Keough and Benjamin Keough, if she died or became incapacitated.

“Lisa Marie’s daughters inherit everything,” the rep continued.

Joel got candid about the Presley family and noted that Elvis wanted his only daughter Lisa Marie to keep his legacy alive.

“When Elvis passed away, he left everything to his little girl. He did so knowing that she would be the one to keep his legacy going,” he remarked.

“I can tell you that she has, without falter, no matter what else was happening in her life, in her career, always been the one to look at what was best for Elvis…regardless of what somebody else was trying to do , regardless of what another family member [was trying to] do.”

Meanwhile, Priscilla Presley spoke out on her daughter’s birthday and stated she plans to “keep our family together” as she continues to mourn Lisa Marie.

“Today would have been Lisa’s 55th birthday. My wish is to protect my three grandchildren and keep our family together,” she told Fox News Digital in part.

Priscilla Presley’s comments come as she has filed documents to dispute who oversees her late daughter’s estate.

The documents were filed in January in the Los Angeles Superior Court to dispute the validity of a 2016 amendment to Lisa Marie’s living trust.

Lisa Marie previously removed Priscilla and a former business manager as trustees and replaced them with her two oldest children, Riley Keough and Benjamin Keough, if she died or became incapacitated.

Lisa Marie’s son, Benjamin Keough, died in 2020.

Joel added that his reason for speaking out about the Presley family is “sometimes you just got to take a stand.”

“It’s Riley. It’s what Lisa would’ve wanted. It’s what makes sense. It always comes back to what’s best for Elvis and that’s what that is,” he suggested.

“… I think what we need to do on her birthday is honor her words. Those were her words, not mine, and it’s something that we all want to think about going forward… What we need to do is we need to honor the ones that honor Elvis, and that was always, always his daughter, Lisa.”

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Launch World Tour in Tampa – Rolling Stone

decades from now, when historians and epidemiologists look back at the Covid era, they’ll probably have a hard time pinpointing the exact moment the pandemic came to an end in America and normal life resumed. Some will probably point to the day in August 2021 when the vaccination rate hit 70 percent, while others will spotlight April 2022, when airlines dropped their mask mandate, or even Joe Biden’s 60 Minutes interview a few months later when he bluntly declared the pandemic over despite protests from members of his own administration. Others still might say that moment is still to come.

From another perspective, though, there’s a strong case to be made that it happened on Feb. 1 at 8:01 pm EST, when Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band walked onstage at Tampa, Florida’s Amalie Arena and kicked off their world tour with a thunderous rendition of “No Surrender” in front of 20,000 screaming, maskless fans.

This moment followed six painfully long years of E Street Band inactivity — including multiple tour delays due to Covid concerns — and a torrent of outrage over Springsteen’s decision to dramatically raise ticket prices this time around. “I know it was unpopular with some fans,” Springsteen told RollingStone late last year, in his only remarks to date on the controversy. “But if there’s any complaints on the way out, you can have your money back.”

Nobody in Tampa seemed headed toward the refund line as “No Surrender” segued into “Ghosts” from 2020’s Letter to You. By this point, any fears the E Street Band might need a few shows to shake off six years of rust were gone. They were locked in tight, beaming with joy, and feeding off the frenzied atmosphere in the crowd.

It was also a slightly different incarnation of the band that now features four backup singers (Curtis King, Michelle Moore, Lisa Lowell, Ada Dyer), a five-piece horn section (Curt Ramm, Barry Danielian, Eddie Manion, Ozzie Melendez, Jake Clemons), and percussionist Anthony Almonte in addition to the usual crew of Soozie Tyrell, Charlie Giordano, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, Garry Tallent, Roy Bittan, Patti Scialfa, and Max Weinberg.

An 18-piece band might seem like overkill considering the original E Street Band got along fine with a mere five musicians, but this show covers a lot of musical ground, including selections from Springsteen’s 2022 soul covers LP Only the Strong Survive, and nobody felt superfluous. This was especially true on “Kitty’s Back,” when Springsteen gave nearly everyone in the band a little moment to shine. A couple of songs later, he invited the background singers to the front to lock voices with him on “Nightshift,” a 1985 Commodores classic that was one of the surprise highlights of the evening.

The long layoff made even E Street standards like “The Promised Land,” “Out in the Street,” and “Prove It All Night” sound fresh and vital again, while the dark Nebraska deep cut “Johnny 99” was transformed into an arena anthem. But the most emotional moment came midway through the night, when the entire band left the stage, leaving Springsteen alone with his acoustic guitar.

Addressing the crowd for the first time in the evening, he told the story of forming his first band, the Castiles, with childhood buddy George Theiss. “Cut forward 50 years,” he said. “On another summer day, I found myself standing at the side of George’s deathbed…His passing would leave me as the last living member of my first band. That’s kind of like standing on tracks with the hot light of an oncoming train barreling down on you. It brings a clarity of thought and a purpose that you might not previously have thought of.”

He continued his story: “I went home and, about a week later, George passed away. Shortly after that, I wrote this song. It’s about the job we choose, the friends we choose, the passion we followed as children. At 15, it’s all tomorrows. At 73, a lot of yesterdays. A lot of goodbyes. That’s why you gotta make the most of right now.”

The arena came to a complete hush as he sang “Last Man Standing” from letter to you for the first time to a live audience. The song focuses on his memories of Theiss, and the hard realization that he’s now the last of the Castiles. “Flock of angels, lift me somehow,” he blood. “Somewhere high and hard and loud/Somewhere deep into the heart of the crowd/I’m the last man standing now.”

Few artists outside of Springsteen could create a moment that intimate and heartfelt in a basketball arena named after an oil company. He followed it up with another mellow letter to you song, “House of a Thousand Guitars,” before bringing everyone back to their feet for a blistering “Backstreets.” The main set ended with “Because the Night,” “She’s the One,” “Wrecking Ball,” “The Rising,” and “Badlands.” The band has celebrated a lot of 70th birthdays since they last played together, but somehow they played those songs with the same level of fire and passion they had decades ago.

After taking a quick bow, the band didn’t even bother to go through the charade of leaving the stage before the encore set. It began with the live premiere of “Burnin’ Train” before the house lights came on for a euphoric double shot of “Born to Run” and “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight).” They then went back to the hits of 1984 with “Glory Days” and “Dancing in the Dark,” though the latter was a slightly truncated version since he didn’t bring any wannabe Courteney Coxes onstage to dance. (This might have been due to Covid concerns, which could also explain why he didn’t crowd surf at any point in the night.)

The night capped off with “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” — complete with video tributes to the late Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici — and an acoustic solo “I’ll See You in My Dreams” that again brought the arena to total silence.

It’s another song about saying goodbye to a loved one, and a reminder that “death is not the end.” As Springsteen sang it, it was hard not to think about Jeff Beck, David Crosby, Tom Verlaine, Barrett Strong, and all the other icons we’ve lost in recent weeks, or the fact that artists of Springsteen’s generation, to use his own words, have a lot more yesterdays than tomorrows. But whatever happens in the future, Springsteen and the E Street Band are finally back on the road, and they’ll be there for at least a year. Let’s enjoy every second of it while we still can.
